At Louis Vuitton Spring 2010, creative director Marc Jacobs saw fit to attach furry tails to the bags. Most of them appeared to be made of dip-dyed cotton canvas in candy colors with coordinating fluffy appendages streaming off the back, which were sometimes bigger than the bag itself. After a dozen looks, I thought I was in for a very unpleasant show.

They weren’t entirely successful, but I appreciate the combination of colors, materials, and textures that Jacobs attempted in order to make something new out of one of the most recognizable logos in the fashion world. The collection was heavy on messengers, and the ones that combined logo leather with smooth in different colors were probably the best bags of the show, in addition to the duffel bags made of similar textures. Please give the tassel-covered bags a rest.

 But after a little while, things started to look decidedly better. I’m not sure if it was just the fashion show version of Stockholm Syndrome, I guess that’s always possible, but things rallied a bit during the middle and end portions of the show. Instead of canvas bags with animal parts hanging from them, Vuitton returned to the leathers and embossed logos to which fans are slightly more accustomed.

The more I look through the bags from the last half of the collection, the more the eclectic ideas and influences grow on me, and I’m not sure what my final opinion will be once the dust of fashion week has settled. One thing is sure, though; adventurous collections like Louis Vuitton, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen are what make Paris the world’s reigning fashion city. New York has some catching up to do.

It’s hard to resist lusting over a Louis Vuitton branded timepiece given the power of the luxury brand. The luxury goods powerhouse takes the already popular Tambour line and adds a new line of two-tone steel and gold watches to the line for 2009, with pieces for both men and women.It should help that the watches are actually very well made, produced in highly limited quantities with fine mechanical Swiss movements. Unlike Louis Vuitton wallets, you can’t find the exclusive timepieces in just any location — you’ll have to search for one of these fine timepieces. 

Louis Vuitton Tambour watches can never be mistaken for mere fashion timepieces. The reason being that they are extremely focused on serving as quality timepieces, with function and legibility holding paramount importance. The 2009 Tambour men’s line comes in at least three varieties: There is a 12-hour chronograph, GMT and small seconds version. Each has high-grade Swiss ETA automatic mechanical movements, while the dials represent highly refined instrumental design. You can see the well detailed chapter rings with minute markers, as well as the clarity of the dials and the length of the hands. 

Others have tried to emulate Louis Vuitton’s now classic Tambour watch case shape that tapers up from the base of the watch sitting on your wrist. The watches are mostly 41.5mm wide and are set with engraved Louis Vuitton branding on the sides. The Louis Vuitton Tambour Two-Tone line consists mostly of stainless steel watches with 18 kt yellow gold placed tastefully in the mix. The bracelet offers gold and steel juxtaposed center links, while the bezel and pushers are mostly in gold. Being the conspicuously designed luxury goods that they are, the watches have a “show me off” rich polishing all over, and an elegant but easy-to-read set of dials. Louis Vuitton places canary yellow hands on the dial for the secondary functions, and gold hands for the hour and minute hands. The silvered face of the watch is done with a slight sunburst polish finish. Mentioning this is important as many other fashion brands don’t put nearly as much effort into the design of their timepiece (with the French houses being an exception).

Have no qualms about liking the Louis Vuitton Tambour Two-Tone watch line — even if you wouldn’t carry one of their wallets. This is an entirely different product from the well known house of luxury, proving that they can be serious about their craft.
